Introduction

I had just stopped my vaccuum cleaner for a minute to do something else. When I returned it would not start again. I figured that the problem must be due to a faulty contact somewhere, given the suddeness of the poblem in a machine that had not given the slightest indication that there were any problems.

It turned out that there is a contact within the cord rewinder that can separate with age. You can easily test if this is your problem by following this procedure. If it is the contact, you can choose to either repair the cord rewinder, replace it with a new part, or use the machine without the cord winder at all.

I had another S612 that I use for spare parts (it was still running, but not pretty!) so I replaced the cord rewinder from that machine.

    • Remove the hose, dust bag and any tools from the housing. Remove the single Philips screw on the grey control panel (indicated in picture by the blue circle). Then full up carefully on the edge of the panel on the side where the screw was (you can slip a large slot screwdriver under to be able to get a grip).

    • The panel will make a noise when the back part snaps out. I thought I had broken the plastic, but the piece is pretty sturdy and it seems that is the way to do it.

    • Now all of the screws for the housing are exposed, as marked in the photos, 4 in the rear and 2 in the front. When these are removed, the entire housing is easily removed.

    • Once all of the housing is removed, the motor and the rewind carousel are visible. To test whether or not the rewind unit is the problem, remove the two wires on the side of the carousel toward the housing (blue = neutral and black = line, N and L are printed on the plastic). The picture indicates these with the two downward-pointing red arrows.

    • Now take an old piece of extension cord with a plug on it, and attach the ends to the wires you just removed, with some electrical tape. Make sure you have contact between the two sets of wires. Now put the grey

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
